1. Opening (June 18 to July 1)

a) ON THE CORNER
JUNE 18 -- Toronto & Vancouver
http://www.topten.ca/2003/content/09.html

During the theatrical release, one dollar from every admission ticket will
be donated to Covenant House, Canada’s largest youth centre, offering
help and hope to homeless young people.

Vancouver writer/director Nathaniel Geary makes his feature debut with
On the Corner, an up-front look at life in Vancouver’s Eastside, the
notorious heroin capital of North America. The film – named one of
“Canada’s Top Ten” films for 2003 by the Toronto Film Festival Group –
gets its authenticity from the fact that Geary, after attending film school,
spent seven years working with substance abusers at the old Portland
Hotel, a government-funded shelter.

The film centres on Angel (Alex Rice), a runaway who fled her Prince
Rupert reserve five years ago and ended up in Vancouver’s urban
ghetto. She now lives at the Pennsylvania – one of the many rundown
hotels in the Eastside. Angel survives as best she can, supporting her
heroin habit by working as a prostitute. When her young brother Randy
(Simon Baker) shows up, Angel reluctantly lets him stay and begins to
rethink her life. But while Angel dreams of getting clean, Randy is lured
into a world fuelled by drugs.

The film was shot at the former Portland Hotel (the shelter is now in a
new location several blocks away), using many extras from the
Eastside.

As well as Alex Rice (Skinwalkers, The Doe Boy) and Simon Baker (The
Missing, Smoke Signals), the fine cast includes Katharine Isabelle
(Ginger Snaps), JR Bourne (named best supporting actor by the
Vancouver Film Critics Circle for On the Corner) and Gordon Tootoosis
(Legends of the Fall).

On the Corner is Nathaniel Geary’s second film, following his short film
Keys of Kingdoms (adapted from the poem by Eastside’s Bud Osborn),
which screened at over 25 festivals, including Sundance. The film was
shot by Brian Johnson (Protection). It was produced by Marc
Stephenson (Heater) and Wendy Hyman (Keys to Kingdom), and
executive produced by Karen Powell.

On the Corner is being released in Canada by TVA Films.

b) ARMY OF ONE, a documentary by Sarah Goodman
JUNE 25 -- Toronto
http://www.redstorm.ca/armyofone/index.html

c) THE FAR SIDE OF THE MOON
June 25-30 -- Ottawa
http://www.topten.ca/2003/content/04.html

d) THE LONG WEEKEND
JUNE 30 to JULY 3, BLOOR CINEMA, TORONTO
http://www.bloorcinema.com

Seven former university roommates gather at a remote cottage in
northern Ontario to celebrate their 10-year reunion. It is the Canada Day
long weekend. They are partying, having a great time, until one-by-one
they begin to disappear…
