b) HYBRID: FICTION, FACTION, AND OTHER LIES
at Cinematheque Ontario, Toronto, from November 19th to December 5th

"In many ways the tension between documentary and fiction lies at the heart of cinema. It's as if the two forms have a pact to keep each other honest." *Martin Scorsese

Cinematheque Ontario, the year-round screening division of the Toronto International Film Festival Group, presents HYBRID: FICTION, FACTION, AND OTHER LIES, a film series curated by Montreal-based award-winning filmmaker and producer Peter Wintonick (MANUFACTURING CONSENT: NOAM CHOMSKY AND THE MEDIA and CINÉMA-VÉRITÉ: DEFINING THE MOMENT).

This series offers a rich selection of conceptually daring films which seek to redefine the boundaries of truth and artifice, forcing the viewer to grapple with shopworn notions of fact, fiction, and their relationship to artistic representation. Encompassing early instances of quasi-cinéma-vérité in Jean Rouch's rare JAGUAR (1967), potent drama/documentary cross-breeds such as Emile de Antonio's IN THE KING OF PRUSSIA (1982), and flat-out fakes like Jim McBride's inventive DAVID HOLZMAN'S DIARY (1967), these provocative works of cinema * dubbed "Hybrid films" by filmmaker, guest curator and lecturer Peter Wintonick * revel in the philosophical conundrum spawned by the conventional truth-claims of the documentary form. In its brief survey of films defying easy categorization, HYBRID: FICTION, FACTION, AND OTHER LIES features works by some of cinema's greatest masters: Orson Welles's wry meditation on forgery, F FOR FAKE (1973), Jean-Luc Godard's sweeping portrait of revolution in the sixties, ONE PLUS ONE: SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL (1968), and Werner Herzog's unearthing of a remarkable life story, LITTLE DIETER NEEDS TO FLY (1997).

To see the complete list of films in the HYBRID: FICTION, FACTION, AND OTHER LIES series, please visit Cinematheque Ontario's website at http://www.bell.ca/cinematheque.

Please note: All public Cinematheque Ontario screenings are held at the Art Gallery of Ontario's Jackman Hall, 317 Dundas St. West (McCaul Street entrance), Toronto. Non-members can purchase tickets three days in advance of a screening. All screenings are restricted to individuals 18 years of age or older.

For ticket information, call the Bell Infoline at 416-968-FILM or visit the official website at http://www.bell.ca/cinematheque.

Special Event!
CINEMATHEQUE ONTARIO LECTURE SERIES PETER WINTONICK LECTURE AND SCREENING OF MILLHOUSE: A WHITE COMEDY (1971)

Guest curator Peter Wintonick will give a talk on documentaries, specifically on the topic of hybrid forms. His remarks will be illustrated with a few short films and clips, beginning with the Lumière Brothers' WORKERS LEAVING THE FACTORY (c.1895) and including some excerpts of Reality TV shows. Wintonick's lecture will conclude with the screening of Emile de Antonio's MILLHOUSE: A WHITE COMEDY.

Peter Wintonick has produced, directed, and edited a diverse range of independent film, video, and new media, including dramatic features, theatrical documentaries, and sociopolitical works. Wintonick, who is based in Montréal, produced and directed (with Mark Achbar) MANUFACTURING CONSENT: NOAM CHOMSKY AND THE MEDIA (1992), the most successful documentary in Canadian history. He also directed the award-winning CINÉMA-VÉRITÉ: DEFINING THE MOMENT (1999).

Patrons, please note: For this special event (lecture and screening), single tickets are $10.25 (including GST) for Cinematheque Ontario members and $15.50 for non-members. a) HAM & CHEESE
Friday, November 19th and Saturday, November 20th
Movie Palace - Hamilton, ON

Hamilton-born director Warren P. Sonoda and writer/star Jason Jones proudly bring home their first critically-acclaimed feature film, HAM & CHEESE, to Hamilton Mountain's newly restored gem of a movie theatre, the Movie Palace. Featuring a cast of well-known Canadian actors including DAVE FOLEY and SCOTT THOMPSON of KIDS IN THE HALL and SAMANTHA BEE of THE DAILY SHOW WITH JON STEWART. Come out and support a night of truly Canadian comedy at Hamilton's premiere art-house theatre.

The edgy new comedy, HAM & CHEESE, is the feature film directorial debut of award-winning veteran music video director, Warren P. Sonoda. Written by and starring Mike Beaver and Jason Jones (from the acclaimed comedy troupe, The Bobroom), the film features these hilarious talents as two of the world's most unsuccessful actors, the hopelessly doltish Richard Wolanski and the erroneously smug Barry Goodson. They have spunk in the face of hardship, pluck in the shadow of adversity, and if Richard doesn't win you over with his heart, then Barry will certainly sell you his soul. HAM & CHEESE features a cast of Canadian comedic stars, including Samantha Bee (correspondent on the Emmy award-winning THE DAILY SHOW) and Dave Foley and Scott Thompson (of KIDS IN THE HALL fame).

The Movie Palace is located at 526 Concession Street (@ Upper Wentworth) in Hamilton, ON. Screening times are 6:30pm and 9:00pm on Friday evening and 5:15pm on Saturday evening. The director will be in attendance at the 9:00pm Friday night screening. Visit www.themoviepalace.com for more information.

Mihkel Harilaid, president of Black Walk, is thrilled to announce the theatrical release of the hilarious indie comedy, HAM & CHEESE. On July 30, Decade Distribution will open HAM & CHEESE on screens across Canada, marking the first time an independent Canadian feature film has received such a wide release in digital format. By taking advantage of the opportunities presented by digital technology, Black Walk and Decade have forged an independent digital distribution network that promises to bring clever, edgy independent features like HAM & CHEESE to Canadian audiences nationwide who might not otherwise have access to such material. Black Walk is breaking ground for the Canadian indie features with this innovative release.

a) SEE GRACE FLY
November 12th - Toronto, Carlton Cinemas
http://www.seegracefly.com/index2.html

SEE GRACE FLY (written & directed by Pete McCormack) was the official
choice
at the Montreal and Vancouver 2003 film festivals.

Grace McKinley is a brilliant 38 year-old woman with schizophrenia.
When her mother dies, Grace's actions become increasingly erratic. She
takes two weeks to report the death, and in that time is sent a shattering
message that only she can decipher.

Grace's younger brother Dominic is a repressed yet courageous
missionary working in war-ravaged Sierra Leone. Called home to arrange his
mother's funeral, he is at the same time forced to deal with Grace's
uncertain future and their forgotten past. The problem is, wanted by the
police for questioning, and with her life threatened, Grace has disappeared
onto the streets of Vancouver, fuelled by an indomitable will to spread
her secret to the masses.

Driven by the courage of love and the agony of mental illness, SEE
GRACE FLY slams heart first into faith, death, sex and family, offering a
gripping look at the precarious balance between belief and reality.

b) THE TAKE
November 12th - Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg & Halifax

running them democratically - without bosses. THE TAKE, a political
thriller directed by Avi Lewis and written by Naomi Klein, is one answer
to the question posed by both critics and supporters of radical
movements worldwide: "We know what you're against, but what are you for?"
