Remember...1st Rule of Film Club: Tell Everyone About Film Club!
Thirty-eight years and still going strong, THIS Magazine is one of Canada's longest-publishing alternative journals. Founded by a gang of school activists in 1966, and originally called This Magazine Is About Schools, the modern-day THIS focuses on Canadian politics, literature and culture but, in keeping with its radical roots, never pulls punches. Subversive, edgy and smart, THIS is the real alternative to that. Visit THIS Magazine's new-and-improved website http://www.thismagazine.ca!

The Cinéfranco film festival, now in its eighth year, was created to celebrate and promote the diversity and richness of French language cinema as an opportunity for Francophones, Francophiles and film lovers to enjoy films rarely seen or not distributed in Toronto cinemas, to give a voice and an identity to the Francophone communities in Toronto, in Ontario and outside the borders of Quebec, and to further and promote friendship, cultural exchanges between the provinces of Ontario and Quebec.
For more information on the wonderful films featured, or on how to purchase tickets, please visit the festival website.
b) CANADIAN FILMMAKERS FESTIVAL, Toronto
April 7th to April 10th, 2005
http://www.canfilmfest.ca
The Canadian Filmmakers Festival, an event devoted solely to the celebration, promotion and advancement of Canadian film, is pleased to announce its 2005 line-up. The Festival is presented by Schweppes and works in association with Film Circuit, a division of the Toronto International Film Festival.
The Canadian Filmmakers Festival will present a variety of 100% Canadian
programming, including features and shorts from across the country.
In keeping with its mandate to explore how to advance the Canadian film
industry, an industry panel discussion entitled Canadian Film: Finding Our
Audience Without Losing Our Voice is being introduced this year. This discussion will feature some of the country's leading industry professionals including writer/director/actor Sarah Polley (DAWN OF THE DEAD, THE SWEET HEREAFTER) and will explore how to increase Canadian theatre audience attendance while enabling
filmmakers to continue to tell their Canadian stories.
The Canadian Filmmakers Festival will screen 10 feature and 17 short English and French language films. Please visit http://www.canfilmfest.ca for a complete film schedule. Program guides are available at the Cineplex Odeon Carlton Cinemas.
c) RESFEST, DIGITAL VIDEO FESTIVAL, Toronto
Royal Cinema, Wednesday, April 13th, 2005
http://www.resfest.com/
Check out great videos by SPIKE JONZE, MICHEL GONDRY and a new short by JARED HESS, director of NAPOLEON DYNAMITE. You can also see the new film, AUTO DESTRUCT: ONE MAN'S OBSESSION WITH WILLIAM SHATNER. AUTO DESTRUCT is a bizarre, comic and often tragic look into the world of Bob, a man desperately unhappy in his own skin. Director James Wilkes takes the audience on a tour through a strange, unexplored corner of the Sci-Fi fandom universe populated by murderous thoughts, wigged out fans, singing Klingons, Greco-Roman wrestling and an obese transvestite Trekkie. What he ultimately shows us however is that Bob is the strangest, saddest creature of all.
d) 5TH ANNUAL REELWORLD FILM FESTIVAL, Toronto
April 13th to April 17th, 2005

e) JACK LAYTON FILM FESTIVAL, Toronto
Bloor Cinema, April 16th to April 17th, 2005

Social Venture Group is pleased to announce the development of the Jack Layton Film Festival in Toronto, at The Bloor Cinema, April 15th to 17th, 2005. Peter Ehrlich, the director of Social Venture Group who developed the concept says, "there are very few politicians who are so consistent in their commitment to certain social democratic values that no one would question if a film festival on the topic was named after them. Agree with his politics or not, Jack is one of those politicians. Whether it's affordable housing, the importance of a green, sustainable environment, women's issues, he has been consistent on the issues since the first day he entered politics. So far, based on the terrific response we have received, everyone 'gets it,' even if they don't agree with Mr. Layton's politics. Even my many Conservative friends think the Festival a good idea."
Says Layton, "when I was asked to lend my name to a film festival that smacked of, and I quote, 'social democracy, the human condition, peace love and understanding and maybe even a laugh or two,' I must admit I felt both honoured and unworthy. But film is important to our community, both artistically and economically, and I'm very proud to be a part of this festival. Recently we have seen the re-emergence of film as a vital and essential medium for making us think about important social and political issues. Michael Moore's 'Bowling for Columbine,' 'Fahrenheit 911,' or 'The Corporation,' or 'The Take' represent the more popular films of recent that have allowed us to seriously question what is happening in the world in recent times. And while my experience with movies extends no further than enjoying them, I do recognize the importance of the art form as a vehicle for change. The best films are films that make us think hard about our lives and how our own lives and actions !
affect other people. The films that we remember best are films that allow us to feel to the point of tears or hysterical laughter. Sometimes a movie doesn't have to even have a plotline. These movies allow us to come to our own very personal conclusions."
Renowned film critic Geoff Pevere together with Ehrlich have programmed an eclectic choice of films designed to satisfy the premise of what may be the longest tag-line ever offered a film festival ˆ films of social democracy, the human condition, peace, love and understanding and maybe even a laugh or two.
Ehrlich adds, "We wanted the programming to be as flexible as possible, not forgetting that having fun should be an essential ingredient of this event. That's why we've programmed not only drama and documentaries but also comedy, music, a Leonard Cohen Theme Night Out, the most classic NFB shorts, and Jack's Personal Pick that has nothing to do with anything, except that it's his personal pick. Jack is a very positive individual and we didn't want to present a bunch of films on the sorry state of the world just because as a politician he often wades into darker issues that pertain to Canada's more vulnerable citizens."
For programming information and other details, please visit the festival website.
