1. Opening
SABAH
Vancouver & Toronto - May 27th
http://www.sabahthemovie.com
Sabah (played by Genie and Gemini Award-winning actor Arsinée
Khanjian) is a 40-year-old Muslim, Arab woman. One day, when Sabah
least expects it, she falls in love with the wrong man: She¹s Muslim,
he¹s not. Keeping him secret from her family, she goes on a whirlwind
affair before both culture and love collide. Sabah must confront her
family in order to make them realize that living happily in Canada
requires bending the rules of their own culture from time to time.
What results is both a clash of values and a test of love¹s ability
to transcend two divided cultures.
If you live in the Toronto area, you can see SABAH at the
Cumberland, the Eglinton Town Centre, Square One Cinema and the
Sheppard Grande. If you live in Vancouver, you can see SABAH at

c) THE PEACEKEEPERS
*FREE PUBLIC SCREENINGS*
Kingston, Ottawa, Vancouver, Halifax & Toronto
http://www.nfb.ca
The National Film Board of Canada (NFB) is pleased to announce the five-city Canadian tour of Paul Cowan's award-winning documentary THE PEACEKEEPERS. The tour begins in Kingston, Ontario, on May 10th at the Royal Military College of Canada. The film will travel on to Ottawa, Vancouver, Halifax and Toronto, before having its world television premiere on CBC Newsworld on May 29th at 10 pm ET/PT - International Day of UN Peacekeepers.
The Toronto screening on Thursday, May 26th at 7:30 pm will be moderated by the host of CBC News: Sunday, Carole McNeil, and will be held at the Royal Ontario Museum (south entrance) at 100 Queen's Park (SW corner of Avenue Road and Bloor Street). To RSVP, call 1.800.542.2164.
Cowan will be present at each screening and will participate in Q&A sessions, where Canadians can talk about issues raised in the film and what they mean for Canada and the world.
Directed and written by Cowan, THE PEACEKEEPERS is a feature-length documentary providing an insider's look at how political, military and financial decisions affect the future of one failed state, this time in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). With unprecedented access to the United Nations Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO), the documentary pivots between New York and the DRC, showing the complexity of putting together a rescue mission in a dangerous, dysfunctional country that most nations want to avoid.

a) ICE BREAKER & THE TUNGUSKA PROJECT
Limited Engagement at Camera Bar
*Filmmakers present at screening on Friday, May 6th!*
http://www.camerabar.ca
Following their sold-out HOT DOCS screenings, Jody Shapiro’s ICE
BREAKER and Gisele Gordon’s THE TUNGUSKA PROJECT will play at Camera
for one week only! Don’t miss the opportunity to see these films. ICE
BREAKER is a voyage of adventure and discovery undertaken by
compelling characters against a backdrop of the awesome beauty of the
frozen North. The film chronicles the most active Canadian Coast Guard ice breaker, The CCGS Henry Larsen, as she and her crew travel from St. John's Newfoundland to Thule, Greenland, patrolling the icy
waters, ensuring the safety of mariners and marine vessels, while
promoting Canada's sovereignty in the North.
In 1908, an explosion equivalent to over a thousand atomic bombs
rocked the Tunguska region of central Siberia and its Indigenous
Evenki inhabitants. It lit up the night skies in London and Paris so
brightly that newspapers could be read outside. Its cause remains a
mystery. THE TUNGUSKA PROJECT follows Canadian Indigenous playwright
Floyd Favel as he travels to the epicenter of the blast. His goal is
the creation of a new play and the closer he gets to the epicentre,
the more his themes for the play unfold, punctuated with whispered
warnings and psychic struggle.
Both Jody and Gisele will be at Camera on May 6th to discuss their
films.

d) POETRY IN MOTION, A Film By Ron Mann
Thursday, May 12th, 2005 at 8:30pm
Transit Gallery, 230 Locke Street South, Hamilton, Ontario
905-522-1299
http://www.transitgallery.ca
Admission is $5 in advance and $7 at the door (seating is limited;
tickets available at Transit Gallery).
Award winning director Ron Mann filmed over 75 poets and writers for
what AMERICAN FILM called the Woodstock of Poetry. Ginsberg,
Burroughs, Baraka, Giorno, Ondaatje, Bukowski, and Di Prima are just
a few of the "beat" poets featured for the first time in this
groundbreaking film. Through the spoken word they reinvented language
giving a fresh, loud voice to an era contending with major change.
Like Walt Whitman before them, these poets felt their world deeply,
and sought the assemblage of words to bemoan its injustices and
celebrate its multitudinous beauty. For younger generations, POETRY
IN MOTION is one of the few remaining documents that capture the
genius and innovations of post-modern American poetry. This 1982 film
features Charles Bukowski, Tom Waits, Amiri Baraka, Anne Waldman,
Helen Adam, Ted Berrigan, Ed Sanders, William S. Burroughs, John
Cage, Robert Creely, Four Horsemen, Michael Ondaatje, Christopher
Dewdney, John Giorno, Jayne Cortez, Ntozake Shange, Gary Snyder, Jim
Carrol, Michael McClure, Diane di Prima, Miguel Algarin, Ted Milton,
Kenward Elmslie and Allen Ginsberg.
