b) Escape to Canada
at the Calgary International Film Festival
Friday, September 30th at 9:30 p.m. at the Uptown Stage & Screen, Screen 1
Saturday, October 1st at 11:59 p.m. at the Globe Theatre, Screen 1

Telling the story of a country's coming of age, this documentary takes a look at the contentiousness between modern Canadian and American identities, politics, and beliefs.  As its alternate title, Land of the Freer, suggests, the world is taking notice that Canada has been putting into action the traditionally-touted American values of liberty, free speech, and social progress.  With legalized same-sex marriage, relatively lax policies on marijuana, and the federal government's and most citizens' opposition to the war in Iraq, tourists are flocking to this "freedom destination," and even Americans are immigrating north in increasing numbers.  As TV host Bill Maher puts it, "Canada is hip," but with the political polarization of such controversial issues, many south of the border are beginning to ask, "Do we really need more Canada?" Directed by Albert Nerenberg.

e) Cinematheque Ontario presents LES BONS DÉBARRAS (GOOD RIDDANCE), directed by Francis Mankiewicz (Canada, 1980, 112 minutes)
Wednesday, October 26th at 8:45 p.m.
Cinematheque Ontario, AGO's Jackman Hall, 317 Dundas St. West, Toronto

One of the true classics of Canadian cinema, LES BONS DÉBARRAS focuses on the twisted, tortured relationship between thirteen-year-old Manon and her mother Michelle, who eke out a living in a small village in the Laurentians. Michelle supports her alcoholic, slow-witted brother and periodically dallies with the local cop, but Manon resents anyone else's claims on her mother's affection - and promptly sets out to eliminate both men from their lives. Belying her angelic looks, Manon is ferocious, smart-mouthed and manipulative, always armed with a devastating retort to any of her mother's desperate pleas, but she's also a child and pursues her goals with unbridled, amoral determination. A powerful mix of backwoods realism and Gothic psychology, LES BONS DÉBARRAS has finished three times in the Festival Group's Top Ten poll on Canadian cinema. The cast includes Charlotte Laurier and Marie Tifo. George Toles (Winnipeg-based screenwriter and academic) will introduce the film.

All Cinematheque Ontario screenings are held at the Art Gallery of Ontario's Jackman Hall, 317 Dundas St. West, Toronto (McCaul Street entrance). Regular tickets are $6 for Members; $5.50 for Student Members and Seniors; and $10.10 for Non-Members. All screenings are restricted to individuals 18 years of age or older, unless noted otherwise. Remember...1st Rule of Film Club: Tell Everyone About Film Club!

Thirty-eight years and still going strong, THIS Magazine is one of Canada's longest-publishing alternative journals. Founded by a gang of school activists in 1966, and originally called This Magazine Is About Schools, the modern-day THIS focuses on Canadian politics, literature and culture but, in keeping with its radical roots, never pulls punches. Subversive, edgy and smart, THIS is the real alternative to that. Visit THIS Magazine's new-and-improved website http://www.thismagazine.ca!
