SCAREDSACRED: FORGEIVENESS, JUSTICE and GENOCIDE, October 29th
What is the interplay between forgiveness and justice? What happens at the juncture of compassion and moral outrage? How does the spirit of a culture survive in exile or under attack? What about the perpetrators? And where is the sacred in all this? Join us for this fascinating discussion with three insightful minds drawing from their experience of the Tibetan exile, the Armenian genocide, and the turmoil of Lebanon and Iraq. Featuring special guests Tibetan scholar and Geshe, Dr. Thutpen Jinpa (Cambridge University; principle translator for the Dalai Lama), Lebanese author Hadani Ditmars (Dancing in the No-Fly Zone, a woman's journey through Iraq) and Armenian Canadian film artist, Atom Egoyan, who will be screening clips from his film ARARAT, about the Armenian genocide. Moderated by Velcrow Ripper.
SCAREDSACRED: AGENTS OF CHANGE, October 30th
A slide show and workshop featuring Richard Fitoussi from the Cambodian Land Mine Relief Fund, a campaign Richard has initiated in aid of one of the subjects of SCAREDSACRED, survivor of the Khmer Rouge genocide, Aki Ra. As a child soldier, Aki was forced to lay land mines by the Khmer. Today, he dedicates his life to de-mining Cambodia, wandering the dangerous fields and jungles with a simple wooden stick, decommissioning hundreds of land mines each year. It's his way of healing both himself, and his broken country. Hosted by Velcrow Ripper.
FIERCE LIGHT: WHEN SPIRIT MEETS ACTION, November 5th (the closing workshop of the series)
FEATURING SPECIAL GUEST: DEEPAK CHOPRA
The closing panel focuses on the merging of the depth of spirit with the power of action, the theme to be explored in part two of the SCAREDSACRED Trilogy: FierceLight, a feature documentary, podcast, and non-fiction novel based on a global quest to discover stories of spiritual activism on the front lines of the planet; contemporary manifestations of what Martin Luther King called "Love in Action," and Gandhi called "Soul Force." It is the way of the Sacred Warrior, uncompromisingly nonviolent, a power that radiates from the heart and outwards, in the form of compassionate action: a FierceLight. Hosted by Velcrow Ripper with special guest, spiritual activist, DEEPAK CHOPRA, author of "Peace is The Way." Deepak will be appearing via live web video. This will be simulcast on the web. Check the website for details.
c) RESFEST Canada Tour
http://www.res.com
http://www.resfest.com
http://www.resfest.ca
RESFEST is now in it's third year in Canada and, for the first time, they are
taking the show on the road to Vancouver and Montreal:
RESFEST Toronto, Royal Cinema
October 27th to October 30th
RESFEST Vancouver, Vancouver International Film Centre
November 11th to November 12th
RESFEST Montreal, Ex Centris
November 25th to November 27th
For the third year running, RESFEST put out a national call for entries for Cancon in order to ensure a healthy Canadian presence among the internationally focused content of the touring festival.
The show opens with the enigmatic but undeniably raucous drum assault of DUMB ANGEL by Winnipegger Deco Dawson. From there the program runs the gamut from the lo-fi mullet-driven foolishness of Daniel Ross's COIFFURE to the sugar saturated animation of I LIKE PANDAS by Jessica Borutski. The program culminates with the shockingly hardcore rabbit puppetry of OCAD student Philip Eddolls's truly gnarly WHAT A WONDERFUL DAY.
The Cancon program will be screened at all three RESFEST Canada dates at the
following times and locations:
RESFEST Toronto
Royal Cinema: 7:00pm on Sunday, October 30th
RESFEST Vancouver
Vancouver International Film Centre: 6:45pm on Saturday, November 12th
RESFEST Montreal
Ex-Centris: 6:00pm on Saturday, November 26th

e) Satan Macnuggit Popular Arts presents RECAP: Video images of the Ontario Coalition Against Poverty
DVD RELEASE PARTY
Thursday, November 3, 9:00pm
The Cameron House, 408 Queen Street West
$5 suggested donation/free with DVD purchase
Copresented by CKLN 88.1 FM and CHRY 105.5 FM
This two-hour set takes "video activism" to a new level. On a single disk it
highlights a full decade of work by one of Canada's most renowned and
contentious social justice groups, the Ontario Coalition Against Poverty.
OCAP's work has ranged from 'addressing the legislature' on June 15, 2000, to raising McGuinty's welfare rates for thousands via their current Special Diet Supplement campaign.
In addition to its documentary value, RECAP showcases an unprecedented diversity of creativity and form in the cinematic presentation of its subject. Along with four very different pieces by curator Jonathan Culp - including two new works, Ghost Squat and Supplement - OCAP is:
- scratch-collaged in Roberto Ariganello's Shelter,
- split-screened in Kika Thorne's The Up and the Down,
- hyper-contextualized in Dan Roy's Barricade # 9,
- captured in words and action with two Toronto Video Activist Collective
productions, Activists Overthrow Mike Harris! and Pope Squat.
RECAP touches down with a screening and celebration at the Cameron House on Thursday, November 3. In between video sets, catch the groovy DJ stylings of Miss Ruckus, Bernie Munich, and the Cameron's own DJ Satan Macnuggit. Doors at 9:00pm.

1. Opening
SCAREDSACRED
October 21st - Toronto, Carlton Cinemas & Camera Bar
http://www.scaredsacred.org/trailer.php
The grassroots team behind the films THE CORPORATION and THE TAKE is excited to announce another visionary and award-winning Canadian documentary. Through their network, they were able to make the film a box office hit in Vancouver. Getting the word out is all due to the help from people like you, forwarding this email, telling their friends, and especially going to see the film on opening weekend! Since the film does not have an actual distributor, this is a real test of how filmmakers can work with grassroots groups to spread the word.
Director Velcrow Ripper will be at the theatre on opening weekend to personalize the SCAREDSACRED experience and answer your questions.
Award-winning filmmaker Velcrow Ripper succeeds in finding hope while remembering some of the darkest moments of human history. Five years ago he set out on an inspiring pilgrimage to visit the 'Ground Zeros' that scar the planet: the minefields of Cambodia, war-torn Afghanistan, the toxic wasteland of Bhopal, post-9/11 New York, Bosnia, Hiroshima, Israel and Palestine. Powerful and rare footage of the Revolutionary Afghan Women's Association (RAWA), multi-faith spiritual leaders, and the Bereaved Family Circle of Israel and Palestine, are among the stories Ripper uncovers. These voices - people, survivors, and visionaries able to transform the scared into sacred - are at the heart of his intimate journey. The film is a visual and auditory treat for the senses.
SCAREDSACRED has been an audience-favourite at festivals all over the world and has garnered numerous awards. Visually stunning with haunting memories and an evocative soundscape, the film is poised to become Canada's latest documentary sensation.

e) Cinematheque Ontario presents LES BONS DÉBARRAS (GOOD RIDDANCE), directed by Francis Mankiewicz (Canada, 1980, 112 minutes)
Wednesday, October 26th at 8:45 p.m.
Cinematheque Ontario, AGO's Jackman Hall, 317 Dundas St. West, Toronto
One of the true classics of Canadian cinema, LES BONS DÉBARRAS focuses on the twisted, tortured relationship between thirteen-year-old Manon and her mother Michelle, who eke out a living in a small village in the Laurentians. Michelle supports her alcoholic, slow-witted brother and periodically dallies with the local cop, but Manon resents anyone else's claims on her mother's affection - and promptly sets out to eliminate both men from their lives. Belying her angelic looks, Manon is ferocious, smart-mouthed and manipulative, always armed with a devastating retort to any of her mother's desperate pleas, but she's also a child and pursues her goals with unbridled, amoral determination. A powerful mix of backwoods realism and Gothic psychology, LES BONS DÉBARRAS has finished three times in the Festival Group's Top Ten poll on Canadian cinema. The cast includes Charlotte Laurier and Marie Tifo. George Toles (Winnipeg-based screenwriter and academic) will introduce the film.
All Cinematheque Ontario screenings are held at the Art Gallery of Ontario's Jackman Hall, 317 Dundas St. West, Toronto (McCaul Street entrance). Regular tickets are $6 for Members; $5.50 for Student Members and Seniors; and $10.10 for Non-Members. All screenings are restricted to individuals 18 years of age or older, unless noted otherwise.

Remember...1st Rule of Film Club: Tell Everyone About Film Club!
Thirty-eight years and still going strong, THIS Magazine is one of Canada's longest-publishing alternative journals. Founded by a gang of school activists in 1966, and originally called This Magazine Is About Schools, the modern-day THIS focuses on Canadian politics, literature and culture but, in keeping with its radical roots, never pulls punches. Subversive, edgy and smart, THIS is the real alternative to that. Visit THIS Magazine's new-and-improved website http://www.thismagazine.ca!
