Toronto premiere of KEKEXILI: MOUNTAIN PATROL as the Closing Night
Gala. KEKEXILI: MOUNTAIN PATROL is Winner of the Golden Horse for
Best Picture and the Special Jury Prize at the Tokyo Film Festival.
This moving yet harrowing motion picture is the most progressive
portrayal of Tibetans yet from China. Stoic and dignified yet not
without their flaws, these men (acted by non-professionals) are as
empathetic as they are benevolent in their cause. Amid stunning
cinematography of some of nature's most rugged terrain, the film
shows how one group is willing to protect their way of life at all
costs, risking perhaps even their own lives. The Closing Night Party
following the screening is free with your Closing Gala ticket (or $3
at the door), and will take place at 10:00 pm at The Underground @
The Drake Hotel, 1150 Queen Street West, featuring DJ San Fran and
Live Visual Environment by mixMotion.

b) CINEMATHEQUE ONTARIO LECTURE SERIES: A ROBIN SPRY TRIBUTE WITH
DON OWEN
Wednesday, November 23rd at 6:30pm
Art Gallery of Ontario, Jackman Hall, 317 Dundas St. West, Toronto
(McCaul Street entrance). Cinematheque Ontario Lecture Series tickets
are $10.25 for members and $15.50 for non-members.

Cinematheque Ontario pays tribute to one of the pioneers of
English-Canadian cinema with this special screening of Robin Spry's
classic, PROLOGUE (1970), a compelling combination of documentary and
fiction. Spry (1939 -2005), who died unexpectedly earlier this year,
was a central figure at the National Film Board of Canada throughout
the sixties and seventies, making such seminal films as FLOWERS ON A
ONE-WAY STREET (1967), a look at the hippie movement in Toronto, and
the controversial ACTION: THE OCTOBER CRISIS OF 1970 (1974), about
the kidnapping of British diplomat James Cross and subsequent murder
of Quebec cabinet minister Pierre Laporte. Much of Spry's work was
progressive, but he was also very much aware of the inevitable,
inherent contradictions in any political stance, nowhere more so than
in PROLOGUE.

Steve Gravestock will lead an on-stage discussion with Spry's friend
and colleague, acclaimed filmmaker Don Owen, focussing on Spry's work
and their time at the NFB.

35MM ARCHIVAL PRINT! PROLOGUE
Director: Robin Spry
Canada, 1970, 87 minutes
Cast: Elaine Malus, John Robb, Abbie Hoffman, Allen Ginsberg
The film centres on two young Montréal hippies: Karen, a would-be
singer who entertains clients at a strip joint, and Jesse, who edits
and publishes a radical newspaper. Their relationship starts to come
unglued when Jesse decides to cover the protests at the Democratic
Convention in Chicago and Karen, tired of political rhetoric and
intrigued by an American drifter's praise of rural life, joins a
commune in Quebec. Spry smartly contrasts the two divergent strains
of sixties radical thought, with Jesse representing political
commitment and action and Karen the back-to-the-land ethos. As Spry
clearly points out, both stances have inherent restrictions. He's
equally adept at satirizing hypocrisy and contradiction elsewhere as
well, cross-cutting between footage of the Canadian government
denouncing the Soviets for invading Prague, while saying nothing
about America's involvement in Vietnam. Filled with vintage sequences
of radicals like Dick Gregory, Allen Ginsberg, and even John Kenneth
Galbraith (beautifully shot by cinematographer Douglas Keifer), the
film is a unique and often charming look at the myths and obsessions
of its period. Print courtesy of the National Film Board of Canada.

All screenings are restricted to individuals 18 years of age or
older, unless noted otherwise. For ticket information, visit the
Official website, http://www.bell.ca/cinematheque
{http://www.bell.ca/cinematheque}, the year-round Box Office at
Manulife Centre (55 Bloor Street West, main floor, north entrance),
or call 416-968-FILM.

c) DION CONFLICT'S MEET THE DIRECTOR SERIES presents FUNERAL HOME
(Canada 1980)
Wednesday, November 23rd at 9:15pm
Royal Cinema, 608 College Street (just west of Bathurst), Toronto

Admission is $6 for members and $8 for non-members.

Some things never rest in peace!

Perky Heather (Lesleh Donaldson) decides to spend the summer helping
her grandmother (Kay Hawtry) convert their funeral home into a
country inn. Soon dead bodies float up in fishing holes and weird
conversations are heard from the embalming cellar. These guests will
check in, but when they check out...it's permanently!

With the film making a slow homage to PSYCHO, it also features a
mistress making the moves on a mentally challenged hillbilly, pick
axe murders, and children being locked in the funeral home's casket
and body laden basement. And finally, you'll see what the guy who
voices over all those Leon's commercials (Harvey Atkin who plays
Harry Browning) really looks like!

Noted by many as a lost genre classic, FUNERAL HOME easily wins a
place in the Canadian horror hall of fame thanks to the skills of its
director. William Fruet builds suspense with intricate Foley
sound, eerie tracking shots and creepy voices. FUNERAL HOME deserves
it's place alongside other Canadian "haunted house" fables peppered
with supernatural elements following in the tradition of "The
Changelling" and "Black Christmas."

This screening of FUNERAL HOME from an archival 35mm print will mark
the 25th Anniversary of this fine classic, an Ebay favorite.
Featuring Dion Conflict doing an interview with William Fruet, plus
an audience Q&A after the film. The evening will be videotaped for a
future DVD release. Not just a film, but a one-time event filled
evening!

4. Coming Soon - LIE WITH ME on November 18th, plus more!

1. Opening

a) THE LIFE AND HARD TIMES OF GUY TERRIFICO - ON and Montreal, QC
http://www.guyterrifico.com/

In 1971, Guy Terrifico was at the zenith of his career. Moments
later, in a blaze of whiskey, pills, cancelled shows and gun shots
his career was over and so - allegedly - was his life. At least so
everyone thought until something truly weird happened; 30 years after
his "death" a new Guy Terrifico album is released. Naturally this has
raised some questions because, as Merle Haggard observes, "It's real
hard to sing when you're dead."

The strange and debatably short life of Guy Terrifico takes us from
the wilds of Canada to the wild times of Nashville and London. Fondly
remembered by his contemporaries like Kris Kristofferson, Ronnie
Hawkins, Levon Helm and Merle Haggard, Guy's life story is told throw
a combination of modern day interviews with his old cohorts and
archival footage of Guy back in the day.

THE LIFE AND HARD TIMES OF GUY TERRIFCO is a film about talent and
excess, and how sometimes you've gotta put the excess behind you
before you can discover the real talent.

This film won the Best Canadian First Feature Film Award at the 2005
Toronto International Film Festival.

b) THE DARK HOURS - Calgary, AB, ON, and Montreal, QC
http://www.thedarkhours.com/
http://www.northernstars.ca/titles/2005/dark%20_hours.html

Paul Fox's award-winning feature THE DARK HOURS will open in major
cities across Canada on November 11. A dark, psychological thriller,
it is already the recipient of numerous awards at international film
festivals, including the Best Actress Award (Kate Greenhouse) at the
Fantasia Film Festival in Montreal, Best Feature Film at the New York
City Horror Film Festival, Best Feature at the Dead by Dawn Horror
Film Festival in Scotland, and the Best of Festival at the Eerie
Horror Film Festival in Erie, Pennsylvania, among others.

"Perfect. Just perfect. THE DARK HOURS is a cool, gritty
psychodrama...Consistently full of surprises and turns, this is a
taut, beautifully realized thriller that goes to the places you least
expect."
-Ain't It Cool News

An original and gripping psychological thriller featuring an exciting
cast of Canadian talent, THE DARK HOURS tells the story of Dr.
Samantha Gordon (KATE GREENHOUSE), a psychiatrist specializing in the
treatment of violent sexual offenders. Sam's day-to-day work-life
requires constant assessment of the boundaries of reality. When
Samantha discovers that she is sick, her own carefully constructed
reality begins to unravel. Samantha decides to take a break and go
away for a winter cottage weekend with her husband, David (GORDON
CURRIE), and her sister, Melody (IRIS GRAHAM). However, when
an ex-patient, Harlan (AIDAN DEVINE), and his partner, Adrian (DOV
TIEFENBACH), arrive to right a wrong, Samantha will be forced to
confront what everyone must at some point: the irrevocability of an
ill-advised decision.

The much-anticipated first feature from award-winning director Paul
Fox (Last Round Up, Reunion, Cold Squad, The Associates, Degrassi:
The Next Generation), THE DARK HOURS re-teams Fox with producer Brent
Barclay (Touch Of Pink, Marion Bridge, Saint Monica), with whom he
made the short film Reunion.

Inspired by the classic thrillers of the 70's, THE DARK HOURS was
originally conceived by Fox and writer Wil Zmak over drinks in a
Calgary bar. "Wil and I discovered a kinship in movies that night -
particularly for the classic horror films from the 60's and 70's.
Movies like Polanski's Repulsion, Rosemary's Baby, and The Tenant -
smart, stylish thrillers made for adults." Inspired by their shared
passion and challenged by the idea of paying homage to their
cinematic heroes, Fox and Zmak agreed that night to collaborate on
what would become a first feature film for both.

Voted one of Canada's Top Ten To Watch by Playback Magazine in 2004,
director Paul Fox attended the New York School of Visual Arts. His
thesis film, Last Round Up, won him 3 SVA awards for Best Film, Best
Director, and Best Editor. It played at both the Mexico City Film
Festival and Sundance, and garnered Paul a "First Look" deal with New
Line. Paul most recently directed the Douglas Coupland feature,
Everything's Gone Green, which will be released in 2006.

THE DARK HOURS is a production of The Feature Film Project of the
Canadian Film Centre and is distributed in Canada by Capri Releasing.

c) CINEMATHEQUE ONTARIO LECTURE SERIES: A ROBIN SPRY TRIBUTE WITH

{http://www.bell.ca/cinematheque}, the year-round Box Office at
Manulife Centre (55 Bloor Street West, main floor, north entrance),

d) DION CONFLICT'S MEET THE DIRECTOR SERIES presents FUNERAL HOME

Not just a film, but a one-time event filled
evening!

e) The Streets Are Alive!

share, the obstacles we face, and the people who are trying to make a
difference.

All films will be followed by a Q&A with guest speakers.

Space Committee.

1. Opening

a) WATER
November 4th - Various
http://water.mahiram.com
http://www.mongrelmedia.com/films/Water.html

WATER was the Opening Night Gala at the 2005 Toronto International Film Festival.

Salman Rushdie says, "Deepa Mehta's WATER is a magnificent film. The ensemble acting of the women in the widows' hostel is exceptional: intimate, painful, wounded, jaundiced, corrupted, tender, tough. The fluid lyricism of the camera provides an unsettling contrast to the arid difficulties of the characters' lives. The film has serious, challenging things to say about the crushing of women by atrophied religious and social dogmas, but, to its great credit, it tells its story from inside its characters, rounding out the human drama of their lives, and unforgettably touching the heart."

Set in 1938 Colonial India, against Mahatma Gandhi's rise to power, the story begins when eight-year-old Chuyia is widowed and sent to a home where Hindu widows must live in penitence.  Chuyia's feisty presence affects the lives of the other residents, including a young widow, who falls for a Gandhian idealist.

b) DESOLATION SOUND
November 4th - Vancouver, Edmonton & Toronto
http://www.equinoxefilms.com

Equinoxe Films is pleased to announce that the noir psychological thriller
DESOLATION SOUND will open in Toronto, Vancouver, and Edmonton on November 4th. Set against the backdrop of B.C.'s beautiful Sunshine Coast, DESOLATION SOUND tracks the disintegration and resurrection of a woman struggling to come to terms with the death of her friend. Scott Weber directs his first feature film, which stars Helene Joy (AN AMERICAN IN CANADA), Jennifer Beals (FLASHDANCE), Ed Begly Jr. (KINGDOM HOSPITAL), Lothaire Bluteau, (LE CONFESSIONAL) and Ian Tracey (DA VINCI'S INQUEST).

The quiet life in the wilderness of Desolation Sound goes from bad to worse for Laurel Elliot (Helene Joy) and her family after a devastating revelation from an old friend. Daughter Margaret (Emily Hirst) sleepwalks and is playmates with an ex-con (Lothaire Bluteau), while husband Michael (Ian Tracey), a wildlife photographer, is frequently absent. Set in the stunning and isolated wilderness, the seeming calm of this rural existence is shaken by the unexpected arrival of Laurel's lifelong friend Elizabeth (Jennifer Beals), much to her husband's disapproval. Laurel soon finds out why, when Elizabeth drunkenly reveals that she had an affair with Michael. An argument and tussle ensues, ending with horrific abruptness when Elizabeth falls to her death.

Laurel turns to her only friend in Desolation Sound, Benny (Blutheau), an
introverted ex-con who is attempting to escape from his own demons. Together
they hide Elizabeth's body. But guilt and obsession take their toll...and
Laurel slowly begins to absorb the persona of her dead friend.

Winner of three Leo Awards (and nominated for 12), DESOLATION SOUND was also the recipient of the Outstanding Team Achievement from the Director's Guild of Canada.

http://www.liewithme.com

Award-winning director and co-writer Clement Virgo joins writer Tamara Faith Berger to discuss the adaptation of Berger's novel, LIE WITH ME, into a screenplay and the collaborative process of working  together as a director-writer team. When Leila meets David, its lust at first sight but Leila soon realizes that her attachment to David is different than anything she's experienced before. Inspired by Bernardo Bertolucci's LAST TANGO IN PARIS, Virgo explores the erotic side of modern-day relationships. Subversive, edgy and smart, THIS is the real alternative to that. Visit THIS Magazine's new-and-improved website http://www.thismagazine.ca!
