2. Festivals, Screenings & Events

a) The Streets Are Alive!
A Public Space Cinema Series
Toronto - Bloor Cinema

Six independent films about the cities we live in, the spaces we share, the obstacles we face, and the people who are trying to make a difference. All films will be followed by a Q&A with guest speakers.

The screenings are also monthly fundraisers for the Toronto Public Space Committee.

For more information on the films, as well as screening dates and times, visit http://www.publicspace.ca/streetsarealive.htm.

b) Canadian Filmmakers Festival Accepting Submissions for 2006 Line-Up

The Canadian Filmmakers Festival, a forum dedicated solely to the advancement of Canadian film, is pleased to announce that the third annual Festival will be held in Toronto from March 23rd to 26th, 2006.

Filmmakers from across the country are invited to submit their short and feature length films for consideration by the Festival jury.

Submission forms and rules are available on the Canadian Filmmakers Festival Web site: http://www.canfilmfest.ca. Deadline for submissions is January 13th, 2006.

The Festival, held in association with Film Circuit, a division of the Toronto International Film Festival Group, was created to provide a forum for Canadian filmmakers to showcase their films and meet to exchange ideas and discuss their work. "Though Canadian filmmakers and their films are beginning to emerge as industry contenders, we live in the shadows of Hollywood and we still have a long way to go before we can call ourselves fully self-sustaining," said Bern Euler, Founder and Executive Director of the Canadian Filmmakers Festival. "Less than five percent of the movies seen by Canadians are made by Canadians, so we've created a forum for filmmakers to exhibit their work in addition to giving the public a chance to see some of our country's best new movies."

The Canadian Filmmakers Festival was also created to promote Canadian Culture. "When we think about feature films we generally think of them only as entertainment," Euler said, "But the movies a country makes do more than entertain, they provide us with ideas, issues and images about who we are and the world around us. Films educate as they entertain, and therefore help to create the unique culture that makes us Canadian. As a country, we need to take more steps to offset the influence that foreign films have on Canadian culture - one of the key goals of the Festival."

Last year's Festival highlights included an animated interactive panel, led by industry experts including Sarah Polley (Genie Award Winner, MY LIFE WITHOUT ME), that examined how to advance the Canadian film industry while enabling filmmakers to tell their Canadian stories. Another notable Festival moment included Don McKellar making a surprise appearance and introduction at the closing night Festival film CHILDSTAR.

Canadian filmmaker Nisha Ganatra's CAKE stars Heather Graham, David Sutfliffe, Sandra Oh, Taye Diggs, Cheryl Hines, and Sarah Chalke.

Taking a weekend break from her freewheeling life as a travel writer and toxic bachelorette, Pippa McGee (Graham) returns to her hometown to serve as yet another bridesmaid at yet another wedding. From the moment she gets off the plane, it's a disaster. Jet-lagged and behind schedule, Pippa makes a spectacle of herself, downing martinis and hitting on men. She struggles home tipsy, only to discover that her widowed tyrannical, publishing mogul father has had a heart attack. Lying frail in his hospital bed, he has only one thing on his mind: he needs an editor for one of his magazines. Pippa volunteers, excited. What's the magazine? Travel? Politics? No. He needs her to run Wedding Bells. How can Pippa McGee adapt to a 9-to-5 life? Write about puffy dresses after hiking in Bali? Deal with being reminded on a daily basis that she is 29-years-old and completely, utterly single?
