1. Opening

a) EVE AND THE FIREHORSE - January 27, 2006
Vancouver & Toronto
http://www.eveandthefirehorse.com/

Eve, a precocious nine year-old with an overactive imagination, was born in the year of the Fire Horse, notorious among Chinese families for producing the most troublesome children. When her older sister Karena becomes fascinated with Christianity, crucifixes pop up next to the Buddha in the family's house and Eve must contend with a Sunday school class where her wild imagination is distinctly out of place. Caught between her sister's quest for premature sainthood and her own sense of right and wrong, Eve faces the challenges of childhood with fanciful humour and wide-eyed wonder. Sometimes the most troublesome children are the ones that touch our hearts most deeply.

Satan Macnuggit Popular Arts presents
TRIGGER CUT
Jonathan Culp: Film and Video Works 2005-1989

"Toronto's most indefatigable underground video guru!" - NOW Magazine

Satan Macnuggit is proud to announce the release of TRIGGER CUT, a two-DVD overview of the diverse and dazzling output of Satan Macnuggit's Jonathan Culp.

Fusing activist inquisitiveness with haywire individualism, defying divisions between high and low art, and blazing trails in his use of collage editing techniques, Culp has been a fixture on the Toronto film and video scene for over a decade. Trigger Cut includes 25 of his best short subjects, ranging from hand processed Super 8 to found footage to satirical slapstick comedy - with their combined budget not exceeding that of Robert Lantos' humidor.

The release event will feature two programmes selected from this luxurious 3+ hour package, including:
- the family-snapshot horror show "Death Mask" (2004)
- the prescient 9/11 pop pastiche, "Plasticman and the Justice League" (2002)
- the emo protest dreamscape "Eventually" (2005)
- the mental-hygiene hypnosis act "How Does It Work?" (2001)
- two separate films about malevolent stuffed animals ("Jonathan Culp!" (1996) and "Knife Machine" (2000))

In between programmes, there will also be a special musical performance by Jonathan, featuring songs from his upcoming CD.

*Jonathan Culp is co-founder of the Toronto Video Activist Collective, long active in the Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto, and a member of Trinity Square Video. He organizes the pioneering Satan Macnuggit Video Road Show, and writes the popular "Stupid Journey" zine. He has performed in the bands Loogan Bin and the Biters. His first feature, "Grilled Cheese Sandwich," will be released in spring 2006.

a) SPEED, MADNESS AND FLYING SAUCERS
A Film By Martin Deckert and Chloe Griffin
North American Premiere
Thursday, January 27, 2006 at 8:30pm
Metro Theatre, 667 Bloor St. W., Toronto
FREE

SPEED, MADNESS AND FLYING SAUCERS is a 30-minute film that uses the parameters of a Hollywood formula: director, actors and crew, to convey in an experimental format the story of Zederick and Zipper. These main characters are colorful and manic low lives whose attempts and ideas of making a movie never get past their coffee cups. The narration of the movie is suspended at times and fragmented into coded references.

There are no key indications of where the story is going, the action in the film is deliberately spun out and slowed down at specific intervals, jarring the viewer into an unfamiliar style of entertainment where no major clues are given as to what is taking place. The main characters, Zipper and Zederick, are situated in various changing backdrops while their conversation revolves repeatedly around fragments of their plan to make a movie.

Co-founders Martin Deckert and Chloe Griffin created Patrick and Kitty Productions in 2004 working together with noise experimentation and video and have produced work that has been screened in Montreal, New York, Ottawa, San Francisco, Vancouver and Berlin. This latest project has been funded by a grant from the Canada Council for the Arts.

2. Festivals, Screenings & Events

a) Canadian Filmmakers Festival Accepting Submissions for 2006 Line-Up

The Canadian Filmmakers Festival, a forum dedicated solely to the advancement of Canadian film, is pleased to announce that the third annual Festival will be held in Toronto from March 23rd to 26th, 2006.

Filmmakers from across the country are invited to submit their short and feature length films for consideration by the Festival jury.

Submission forms and rules are available on the Canadian Filmmakers Festival Web site: http://www.canfilmfest.ca. Deadline for submissions is January 13th, 2006.

The Festival, held in association with Film Circuit, a division of the Toronto International Film Festival Group, was created to provide a forum for Canadian filmmakers to showcase their films and meet to exchange ideas and discuss their work. "Though Canadian filmmakers and their films are beginning to emerge as industry contenders, we live in the shadows of Hollywood and we still have a long way to go before we can call ourselves fully self-sustaining," said Bern Euler, Founder and Executive Director of the Canadian Filmmakers Festival. "Less than five percent of the movies seen by Canadians are made by Canadians, so we've created a forum for filmmakers to exhibit their work in addition to giving the public a chance to see some of our country's best new movies."

The Canadian Filmmakers Festival was also created to promote Canadian Culture. "When we think about feature films we generally think of them only as entertainment," Euler said, "But the movies a country makes do more than entertain, they provide us with ideas, issues and images about who we are and the world around us. Films educate as they entertain, and therefore help to create the unique culture that makes us Canadian. As a country, we need to take more steps to offset the influence that foreign films have on Canadian culture - one of the key goals of the Festival."

Last year's Festival highlights included an animated interactive panel, led by industry experts including Sarah Polley (Genie Award Winner, MY LIFE WITHOUT ME), that examined how to advance the Canadian film industry while enabling filmmakers to tell their Canadian stories. Another notable Festival moment included Don McKellar making a surprise appearance and introduction at the closing night Festival film CHILDSTAR.
