1. Opening

a) SIX FIGURES
March 31, 2006 - Toronto

Warner (JR Bourne) and Claire (Caroline Cave) are a happily married couple with two kids and rewarding careers. Warner is the new director of a not-for-profit organization and Claire is employed at an art gallery. Preferring to work doing what they love, money has rarely been a primary motivator for them but recently, it seems, money is all they can talk about. In a boomtown like Calgary where everyone seems to have more than them, Warner and Claire are tired of getting by with less.

In an overheated real-estate market, they spend more than they anticipated on a house just as Warner's probationary period at work has been extended. The timing could not be worse and as pressure to keep up with family, job and financial obligations mounts, the stress begins to take its toll on Warner. But is it enough to trigger a murderous rage? When Claire is viciously attacked, Warner emerges as the prime suspect. Based on the novel by Fred Leebron and directed by David Christensen.

Film Club Newsletter - March 24, 2006

1. Opening - NIAGARA MOTEL, LOOKING FOR ANGELINA & THESE GIRLS
2. Festivals & Special Events
3. Now Playing
4. Coming Soon

------

1. Opening

a) NIAGARA MOTEL - Vancouver, Winnipeg & Toronto
March 24th, 2006
http://www.niagaramotelthemovie.com

In NIAGARA MOTEL, a group of struggling individuals cross paths at a low-rent motel in the tourist Mecca of Niagara Falls. They are not tourists and they are all, for various reasons, at crisis points in their lives. The main characters are: a knockout waitress being recruited to star in low budget porn videos, a young couple with criminal pasts struggling to recover their child from social services, and a middle class husband and wife whose marriage is disintegrating. The story also includes the woeful drunken motel manager, a prostitute working to support two children, a small time hustler, an underachieving staple salesman, the Serbian owner of the motel, his physics studying daughter, and a social worker with a Christian bias.

The needs of these people, their obvious failings and the unlucky conditions of their lives make them so vulnerable that they careen from the disturbing to the hilarious in a breathless instant. In this story, tragedy waltzes with unpredictable comedy in an intense dance of life.

Directed by Gary Yates and starring an ensemble cast that includes Wendy Crewson, Peter Keleghan and Kevin Pollak.

b) LOOKING FOR ANGELINA
March 24th, 2006 - Toronto
http://www.lookingforangelina.com

LOOKING FOR ANGELINA is based on the true story of Angelina Napolitano, whose murder conviction in Sault Ste. Marie caused an uproar around the globe in the early 1900s. It was one of the greatest stories of the 20th century. On Easter Sunday in 1911, Angelina Napolitano, a 28-year-old Italian immigrant and mother of four, killed her abusive husband Pietro Napolitano (Alvaro D'Antonio) with an axe as he lay asleep in their bedroom in Sault Ste. Marie's "Little Italy". After a three-hour trial, represented by a lawyer (Keith Knight) who was given only hours to prepare, Napolitano was sentenced to hang. The story was picked up by an American reporter (Norma Dell'Agnese) and soon the signatures of hundreds of thousands of petitioners from around the world arrived at the office of Canada's Justice Minister (Andrew Gillies) demanding her release. The global media frenzy surrounding the events of Napolitano's trial and the discrimination that it highlighted in Canada's legal syste!
m are the subjects of the film. Following the "script" of the original trial, courtroom scenes were shot - most remarkably - in real time with multiple cameras on the original site.

This period piece film is in half English and half Italian (authentic Neapolitan dialect) with English subtitles. It was written by Alessandra Piccione and Frank Canino and marks the first time the story of Angelina Napolitano is being told on screen. Shot in only 14 days with a limited budget and with the assistance of 300 volunteer extras in the City of Sault Ste Marie. The soundtrack, composed by Angelo Oddi, is performed by world-renowned virtuoso musicians Quartetto Gelato and also includes a haunting "Sanctus" sung by the infamous St.Michael's Boy's Choir. The superb ensemble cast, many of whom learned a new language (Neapolitan) to authentically portray their characters, also includes Gerry Mendicino (My Big Fat Greek Wedding); Dom Fiore (The Recruit, Bonnano: A Godfather's Story); Matt Gordon (Shall We Dance); and Salvatore Antonio (The Gospel of John).

c) THESE GIRLS
March 24th, 2006 - Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Toronto, Ottawa & Halifax
http://thesegirlsthemovie.com/

Based on the humorously edgy play by Vivienne Laxdal, THESE GIRLS is the story of three teenage girls who, in turn, seduce and then attempt to share Keith (David Boreanaz), an older married man. It is a tale of innocence, jealousy and friendship told as a provocative coming-of-age story.

When Keira (Caroline Dhavernas) and Lisa (Holly Lewis) discover that their best friend Glory (Amanda Walsh) is sleeping with Keith Clark (Boreanaz), they both, in their own ways, go about seducing him as well. When each discovers that the other is involved with Keith, their friendship is put to the test. However, rather than squabble over him and run the risk of all losing out, they decide to make a pact and share him. At first, Keith puts up resistance to the plan, but soon finds out that he has very little to say in the matter. He takes it like a man and caves in.

Their scheme works out well for a while, but eventually all good things must come to an end. On a fateful night, a desperate and sexually exhausted Keith sets in motion his escape plan and everything comes crashing down.

1. Opening

a) FETCHING CODY
March 17th, 2006 - Vancouver
http://www.cheapanddirty.ca/

Over the last few years, Jay Baruchel lit up the screen as Danger in "Million Dollar Baby" and the scene-stealing Zeppelin fan in "Almost Famous." Now, Baruchel realizes his romantic lead potential as the star of David Ray’s imaginative love story FETCHING CODY.

Set in Vancouver’s notorious Downtown Eastside, Baruchel plays Art Frankel, a hustler and general lay-about, who is head over heels in love with the luminous Cody Wesson (Sarah Lind). When she falls into a coma from an apparent overdose, it is up to Art to seek out the one person who offers him any kind of hope: his homeless friend Harvey – and the time machine he found in a dumpster.

Desperate to reach her, Art suspends disbelief and embarks on a quest through time and space deep into Cody’s past. After several humiliating attempts to figure out where things went wrong, it slowly begins to dawn on him that the real problem in her life might just be him. What ensues are a series of increasingly reckless attempts to avoid the one thing he fears most – sacrificing his profound love for Cody in exchange for her life.

A startling debut by first-time director Ray, FETCHING CODY is sure to rouse the most cynical heart with this wildly original tale about redemption and the lengths a most unlikely hero will go for love.

b) THE LAST TRAPPER
March 17th, 2006 - Vancouver & Toronto
http://www.lederniertrappeur.com

On an incredible Canadian "White Odyssey" crossing 8,600 kilometers by dog-driven sled from Alaska to Quebec, filmmaker Nicolas Vanier met Norman, a modern-day Jeremiah Johnson—a Davy Crockett for a world that has forgotten its past.

Norman, 50, lives in the Yukon woods with a Nahanni Indian woman named Nebraska. A long-time trapper, he doesn’t need society's luxuries. He has his dogs and he eats what he hunts or fishes. He handmade his sled, his rackets, his hut and his canoe with the wood he gets from the forest. Leather is tanned by Nebraska for him in the old way, as the ancient Sekani Indians did.

Hunting lynxes, beavers, martens, wolves and wolverines provides the rest. Each spring, he goes to Whitehorse or Dawson to sell furs and buy sundries: cigarette tobacco, ammunition, traps, flour, matches, candles and batteries for his radio. He travels with his dogs. They are silent and allow him to gaze undisturbed at the majestic landscapes he crosses. That is what makes Norman trap. The Great North is in him, and Nebraska carries it with her, in her blood, because the boreal forest is her people's mother.

The audience gets a day-to-day portrait of a pure spirit, existing in accord with his environment, and living respectfully off the lives of fellow creatures.

c) LUCID
March 17th, 2006 - Vancouver, Winnipeg & Toronto
http://www.lucidthemovie.com

Joel Rothman (Jonas Chernick of "Inertia" and "7x Lucky"), a thirty-two-year-old psychotherapist, is having trouble sleeping. His wife has left him after an adulterous incident at the cottage. He fills the hours of insomnia obsessively listening to her final angry voicemail message and drawing sheep on the wall. He finds it tough to work and, worse, can no longer communicate with his distressed daughter - not to mention the notable decline of his driving skills.

Joel's newest patients are suffering from various symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder and, under his compromised care, are getting increasingly worse. Victor (Callum Keith Rennie of "Memento", "The Butterfly Effect" and "Falling Angels"), an unpredictably volcanic well of anger and frustration, believes that he is the subject of a secret government experiment. Chandra (Michelle Nolden of "Show Me", "Men with Brooms" and "Ghost Whisperer"), soft-spoken and suffering from low self-esteem, is convinced that the city is mysteriously shrinking around her. Sophie (Lindy Booth of "Cry Wolf", "Dawn of the Dead" and "Rub and Tug"), a beautiful young woman with a consuming addiction to prescription medication, believes that she is immortal.

Hitting rock bottom, Joel's life has completely unravelled and he is in serious danger of losing his job. He even begins to hear profanities erupting from a children's cartoon show. Although Joel persists in trying to understand what is happening to him and his charges, he has become as unstable as they are and the line between doctor and patient is starting to blur.

The black humour of LUCID 's script, a collaboration between director Sean Garrity and Chernick, plays to the actor's gift for clever repartee and to his natural vulnerability. Strong performances from the entire cast lend a precise realism to Garrity's strange, illusory world, in which Joel must confront, decipher and conquer the puzzle-like realm of his psyche.

Sean Garrity's "Inertia" won the award for Best First Feature at the 2001 Toronto International Film Festival.

a) BEOWULF & GRENDEL
March 10th, 2006 - Various (check local listings)
http://www.beowulf-movie.com

Equinoxe Films is pleased to announce that Sturla Gunnarsson’s eagerly anticipated BEOWULF & GRENDEL will open in theatres across Canada on March 10th. Set against the dramatic background of a wind-whipped, ocean-battered Icelandic landscape, the film tells the bloody tale of the warrior Beowulf's battle with Grendel, a great and murderous troll.

The seminal Anglo Saxon poem has been thoroughly updated by screenwriter Andrew Rai Berzins, using contemporary English, inflected with a wry sense of humour. BEOWULF & GRENDEL nonetheless retains the full heraldic glory and mythical epic qualities that have inspired so many readers.

In this telling, the battle scarred Norse hero Beowulf (Gerard Butler) leads a troop of warriors across the sea to help his old friend, King Hrothgar (Stellan Skarsgärd), whose kingdom is being ravaged by the marauding troll, Grendel (Ingvar Sigurdsson).

However, Beowulf's attempts to fight the troll are thwarted when Grendel refuses to engage him in battle. Despite his seemingly savage nature, the troll is adhering to a strict code of retribution: his quarrel is not with Beowulf but with the Danes. When Beowulf meets Selma (Sarah Polley), a mysterious and sensual witch, his understanding of revenge is further complicated and he begins to waver in his commitment to kill on behalf of King Hrothgar.

Paired with the inimitable Skarsgård as the ailing and deceitful king, Butler powerfully portrays the conflicted Beowulf as he endures the slow erosion of his military code of conduct. More than a straightforward story of blood, beer and sweat, BEOWULF & GRENDEL powerfully entwines themes of vengeance, loyalty and mercy. The film strips away the mask of the hero myth, leaving a raw and tangled tale that rings true today.

Icelandic born, Canadian raised director Sturla Gunnarsson’s films have received international acclaim and won Genie, Gemini and Emmy Awards, and an Oscar nomination. Feature films include the comedy, Rare Birds, starring William Hurt, and the adaptation of Rohinton Mistry’s Such A Long Journey, starring Roshan Seth and Om Puri. His documentaries include the cinema verité classic, Final Offer and the apartheid love story, Gerrie & Louise.

Scottish born actor Gerard Butler recently starred as the title character in Phantom of the Opera and as the enigmatic stranger in Dear Frankie. His numerous credits include Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, starring opposite Angelina Jolie, Michael Crichton’s Timeline and Wes Craven’s Dracula 2000. He recently completed filming 300, based on Frank Miller's graphic novel, in which Butler stars as King Leonidas who led the Spartan army against the advancing Persians in the Battle of Thermopylae.

Swedish film star Stellan Skarsgärd has appeared in innumerable films directed by masters of world cinema including Lars Von Trier, Roman Polanski, Phillip Kaufman, Gus Van Sant and Steven Spielberg.

Sarah Polley is one of Canada’s most renowned and beloved actresses.

Toronto - The 31st Toronto International Film Festival opens September 7th with the highly anticipated world premiere Gala Presentation of THE JOURNALS OF KNUD RASMUSSEN. Directed by Zacharias Kunuk and Norman Cohn, the film follows Kunuk's critically acclaimed success ATANARJUAT THE FAST RUNNER and explores the history of the Inuit people through the eyes of a father and daughter. THE JOURNALS OF KNUD RASMUSSEN highlights the Festival's commitment to showcasing Canada's extraordinary and diverse filmmaking talent. 2. Opening - THESE GIRLS (Quebec)

THESE GIRLS - March 3, 2006 - Quebec (check local listings)
http://thesegirlsthemovie.com/

The Canadian Filmmakers Festival, an event devoted entirely to the celebration, promotion, and advancement of Canadian film, is pleased to announce its 2006 programming line-up. The Festival is presented by Schweppes and works in association with Film Circuit, a division of the Toronto International Film Festival Group.

The Canadian Filmmakers Festival will present a variety of 100% Canadian programming including features and shorts from across the country. The Festival's opening night movie, Blake Van de Graaf's SIDEKICK, stars David Ingram (QUEER AS FOLK, TWITCHES), and Daniel Baldwin (PAPARAZZI), and follows Norman (Perry Mucci), a comic book obsessed computer consultant who is faced with the heartbreaking realization that not all people with extraordinary abilities are meant to be superheroes, when he decides to train a fellow-co worker with superpowers.

This year's programming line-up also includes: John Kalangis' film, LOVE IS WORK (2005 Whistler Film Festival Audience Choice Award winner), starring Shauna MacDonald (TRAILER PARK BOYS, THIS HOUR HAS 22 MINUTES) and Scott McCord (THE ELEVENTH HOUR), a film about the intense and disorienting moments in the lives
of five couples meeting at the same restaurant as they contemplate the themes of money, sex, death, birth, fame, and of course, love; THE FRENCH GUY, by Ann
Marie Fleming, a pitch-black comedy that follows brain surgery survivor and renewed humanitarian, Elizabeth Murray (Babz Chula) on an absurd adventure of goodwill gone awry; and Jim Donovan's PURE, a raver-friendly drama staring Laura Jordan (BERKELEY, PLAYMAKERS) about the extreme highs and crashing lows of a
group of young Montrealers seeking a purpose.

Other notable Festival screenings include acclaimed director Anita Doron's film, THE END OF SILENCE, a poetic love story that follows Darya (Ekaterina Chtchelkanova), a Russian ballerina who is forced into poverty and obscurity after her career is cut short, and her paramour, Eddie (John Tokatlidis), a man preoccupied with his past and his ex-wife Nora (portrayed by singer songwriter Sarah Harmer in her feature film debut); and the documentary CHAIRMAN GEORGE, written, directed and produced by Daniel Cross and Mila Aung-Thwin, that follows George Sapounidis, a shy, Greek-Canadian statistician and Mandarin folk-singing sensation on his quest to perform at the closing ceremonies of the 2004 Olympic Games.

Remember...1st Rule of Film Club: Tell Everyone About Film Club!

Thirty-eight years and still going strong, THIS Magazine is one of Canada's longest-publishing alternative journals. Founded by a gang of school activists in 1966, and originally called This Magazine Is About Schools, the modern-day THIS focuses on Canadian politics, literature and culture but, in keeping with its radical roots, never pulls punches. Subversive, edgy and smart, THIS is the real alternative to that. Visit THIS Magazine's new-and-improved website http://www.thismagazine.ca!
