3. Call for Submissions (Toronto)

MobiFest is Canada's first mobile film festival, created to recognize excellence and innovation in made-for-mobile films.

MobiFest will take place on May 17th, 2006 at the Isabel Bader Theatre in Toronto. Submissions are being accepted now through April 30th.

All films must be 60 seconds or less, and shot and created specifically for the small screen, either a mobile phone, smartphone, IPod or other handheld device. For more info, got to http://www.mobifest.ca.

Emerson Thorsen (Aaron Webber), 13, lives with his parents Kaya and Rog in their eco-home in the wilds of Nova Scotia. His mother enrolls him in the local school. There, Emerson's English teacher is Don Waltz. At 42, the solitary Don has settled into a life of perpetual adolescence, paying regular visits to a park washroom for anonymous sex. In the classroom, Emerson stirs things up. Surprisingly, Don sees a bit of himself reflected in Emerson. Emerson, initially scornful of his teacher, quickly develops his first crush -- on Don. The precociously confident boy, raised in a household of casual nudity and sexual openness, throws himself into this awakening of his heart with dangerous abandon. This is going to be a Whole New Thing. For everyone.

Highlights of the 9th Cinefranco are a Homage to Jacques Villeret, one of France's most highly respected and deeply cherished actors and 'Spotlight on Morocco.'

Cinéfranco pays tribute to the celebrated and much-loved Jacques Villeret by presenting two of his classic films: the hilarious 'The Dinner Game' and the lyrical 'Children of the Marshland.' The great gift of cinema is that it captures dazzling talent and allows us to savour it after the actor has left us. So, also presented is Villeret's last films: the comedies 'L'Antidote' and 'Iznogoud' and the provocative 'Grey Souls.'

Under the banner 'Spotlight on Morocco,' the festival will explore the country's new cinema with challenging films such as Daoud Aoulad-Syad's 'Tarfaya' (director attending) and Yasmine Kassari's 'The Sleeping Child,' and go on wild adventures with Bourlem Guerdjou's 'Zaïna, Rider of the Atlas.'

As always, the latest work of some of France's best loved stars, such as Carole Bouquet, Thierry Lhermitte, Sandrine Kiberlain, Romain Duris and Charles Aznavour, as well as the country's most interesting directors, including Yves Angelo ('Grey Souls,' director attending), Jacques Audiard's multiple award-winning 'The Beat That My Heart Skipped,' Luc Picard ('The Audition,' director attending), Brigitte Rouan ('Housewarming'), Bernard Rapp ('An Innocent Little Game'), and Jean-Jacques Zilbermann ('Bad Spelling'), will be on view.

b) EVE & THE FIREHORSE at York University, Independents Series
Monday, April 10th, 2006

As part of its ongoing Independents series, The Department of Film at York University proudly presents Julia Kwan, one of the Canada’s most promising young filmmakers.

Following an introduction by Dr. Suzie Young, scholar, cultural theorist, and professor of Film Studies at York University, Ms. Kwan will present and discuss her internationally acclaimed debut feature EVE & THE FIREHORSE (2005). The screening will take place at The Cinema, 102 Accolade East building at 2:00pm, on Monday, April 10th.

EVE & THE FIREHORSE is the first and only Canadian film ever to win the prestigious Special Jury Prize award at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival. A quiet meditation on the subject of childhood, the film tells the story of two young Chinese-Canadian sisters dealing with issues of faith as they grow up during the 1970s. It fuses together Eastern and Western theology, superstition, the experience of Canadian immigrants and the complex family bonds of the working class.

“The wide-eyed innocence of childhood and the baffling structure of religion butt heads in Julia Kwan's EVE & THE FIREHORSE, a sweet, perfectly observed family drama,” writes Aaron Ellen of the Daily Utah Chronicle.

“EVE & THE FIREHORSE is everything good filmmaking ought to be - rich, inventive storytelling, just the right touches of humor and levity, and heart-rending acting from both young girls and veteran [Vivian] Wu,” writes Kim Voyner of Cinematical.

About Dr. Suzie Young: Dr. Suzie S.F. Young teaches film and television studies in the Department of Film at York University. She is a film scholar and cultural theorist specializing in Asian cinema, the horror genre and feminism and popular culture. Originally from Hong Kong, she has lectured on a variety of cultural topics including the New Wave Cinemas of the three Chinas, exilic identities of the Chinese diaspora in Canada, and the oeuvre of Canadian director David Cronenberg.

Dr. Young has also taught cultural studies, film theory and history at Trent University, Ontario, the University of Manitoba and the University of California, San Diego. She joined York's Department of Film & Video in 2000.

About Julia Kwan: International award-winning filmmaker Julia Kwan is a writer, director and producer living in Vancouver, B.C. A second generation Chinese-Canadian, Ms. Kwan was the first in her family to pursue a career in the arts, and majored in film at the Ryerson Polytechnic University. There she produced, wrote and directed her fourth year student film "Inflamed" (1993) which received several awards, including best experimental at the Canadian Student Film Festival in Montreal and The Chairman’s Award (best film overall) at TVOntario Telefest.

Ms. Kwan also has made several short films, including the experimental film, "Prized Possessions" (1997), and the comedy/drama, "10,000 Delusions" (1999), which was honored with the Lumiere Award (best film award) at the New Orleans International Film Festival.

In 2001, Ms. Kwan was a director resident at the prestigious Canadian Film Centre. There, she made her short drama, "Three Sisters on Moon Lake" (2001), which had its Canadian premiere at the Toronto Film Festival and its U.S. premiere at the Sundance Film Festival.

EVE & THE FIREHORSE marks Ms. Kwan’s feature film debut. It has received numerous awards including best Canadian Feature Film at the 2005 Vancouver International Film Festival and the Special Jury Prize at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival.

d) RES 10 Celebrates Ten New International Talents

Each year, RES Magazine selects ten creative souls who are poised to achieve greatness and profiles them in their magazine/DVD. This year's group of talented directors, musicians and designers is Dougal Wilson, Takagi Masakatsu, Martin de Thurah, Flourescent Hill, Eclectic Method, Impactist, Ghislain Poirier, Marina Zurkow, Nash Edgerton and Keita Takahashi. To celebrate their work, RES Canada is pleased to present a special Screening + Party to take place at the Drake Hotel Underground on Friday, April 14th.

Doors will open at 8PM and they will be commencing a screening of works from the RES 10 at 9PM. The screening will also include a special presentation of "Never Like The First Time," a startling animated documentary on four very different individuals' first sexual experiences. Directed by Jonas Odell, the short has screened at numerous international festivals and recently won best short film honors at the Berlin Film Festival. Following the screening will be an evening of music hosted by none other than Montreal's Ghislain Poirier, along with DJ Vitaminsforyou. It promises to be a fun night and they are hoping all of you can make it out to see some great new work, have some drinks and discover why Montrealers have been packing Ghislain's weekly "Bounce Le Gros" parties for over a year.
