1. Opening - SOUVENIR OF CANADA & ESCAPE TO CANADA

a) SOUVENIR OF CANADA
Friday, May 26th - Toronto & Vancouver
http://www.souvenirofcanada.com/

Come join Douglas Coupland, one of our greatest national voices, on a hilarious, cinematic joyride.

SOUVENIR OF CANADA joins internationally celebrated author Douglas Coupland (Generation X, jPod) on a journey to find out what makes Canadians, Canadians. Coupland seeks out the answers in the darnedest of places: like stubby beer bottles, Ookpiks, bilingual cereal boxes and Terry’s Fox’s worn-out sock. His dream is to build a “Canada House” to house all these unique pop objects and memories, that only Canadians will understand.

Rife with humour, nostalgia and insight, SOUVENIR OF CANADA is the movie event that has critics raving and audiences buzzing.

b) ESCAPE TO CANADA
Monday, May 29th - Vancouver
http://www.viff.org/tixSYS/vifc/filmguide/event.php?EventNumber=1123

The "Cantastic" ESCAPE TO CANADA will be closing the DOXA Film Festival in Vancouver this Sunday at 7 pm (see below for details). Director Albert Nerenberg and the possibly soon-to-be-extradited "Prince of Pot," Marc Emery, will be in attendance. Guaranteed to be an over the top performance.

Sunday May, 28th at 7 pm at the Granville 7 in Vancouver.

ESCAPE TO CANADA then opens commercially at the Vancity Theatre. Playing from May 29th to June 7th.

2. Festivals - Don't miss the end of Inside Out or the DOXA Documentary Festival!

a) Inside Out Toronto Lesbian and Gay Film and Video Festival
May 18th to May 28th
http://www.insideout.ca

Precocious right out of the gate, Toronto's annual Inside Out Toronto Lesbian and Gay Film and Video Festival has been challenging the status quo and shaking the foundations of sexual politics since the dawn of the '90s.

Bigger and more audacious than ever, the 16th edition of Inside Out features a brand new programmer and creative force in Gary Varro, 269 films from a record number of countries (27), and a featured geographical film mecca - Latin America - whose creative output is provocative, thought-provoking and "hot."

Festival screenings take place at two venues, Isabel Bader Theatre and the Royal Ontario Museum. In addition, free community screenings will be held at the NFB Cinema. Ticket prices are $9.50 & $10.50 (plus gst) for regular screenings, and $22 & $27 (plus gst) for Galas. Youth and senior discounts are also available.

Tickets went on sale Friday, May 5th through the website http://www.insideout.ca and at the Inside Out advance box office, Festival Ticketing, located inside the Manulife Centre, 55 Bloor Street West, main floor.

b) DOXA Documentary Film and Video Festival, Vancouver
May 23rd to May 28th
http://www.vcn.bc.ca/doxa/

The 2006 DOXA Documentary Film and Video Festival marks the Festival's fifth edition and features six days of innovative and groundbreaking documentaries from Canada and the world - discover a whole cast of renegades, dreamers, lovers, outcasts, inventors, escapees and insomniacs.

This year features programs selected by guest curators, filmmaker Jessica Meistrich Gidal and writer/film reviewer Katherine Monk, and competitions for best feature and short documentary.

The Closing Night film is Albert Nerenberg's ESCAPE TO CANADA. The film will close the Festival before beginning a commercial run at the VIFF theatre. The action-packed 80-minute film exposes Canada's 'Summer of Love,' when same-sex marriage spread from province to province, and marijuana cafes opened across the land. This feature documentary suggests that Vancouver is driving Canada's freedom movements. The film will run commercially from May 29th to May 31st and from June 6th to June 7th at the Vancouver International Film Centre & VanCity Theatre.

1. Festivals - Don't miss Inside Out or the DOXA Documentary Festival!

a) Inside Out Toronto Lesbian and Gay Film and Video Festival
May 18th to May 28th
http://www.insideout.ca

Precocious right out of the gate, Toronto's annual Inside Out Toronto Lesbian and Gay Film and Video Festival has been challenging the status quo and shaking the foundations of sexual politics since the dawn of the '90s.

Bigger and more audacious than ever, the 16th edition of Inside Out features a brand new programmer and creative force in Gary Varro, 269 films from a record number of countries (27), and a featured geographical film mecca - Latin America - whose creative output is provocative, thought-provoking and "hot."

Johnny-come-lately TransAmerica may have taken the transgender experience to the Oscar mainstream this year, but Inside Out has been ahead of that wave from the beginning and carries on with a plethora of transgender films from near and far. A program of trans features and feature-length documentaries will complement the always much-talked-about trans shorts program, this year entitled Reel Trans. Other trans-themed work in the Festival this year includes Enough Man, Wild Side, 20 Centimetres, Tropic of Capricorn, Butterflies, and Rosario Miranda, to name a few.

In a musical vein, Inside Out presents Backalley Jukebox (a program consisting of rare queer music videos); Pick Up The Mic, a documentary about queer hip-hop artists; Life In A Box - an intimate look at the on-the-road travels and travails of the gay musical duo Y'All; and Is It Really So Strange?, a much-anticipated profile of the elusive British artist Morrissey that explores a weird offshoot fan base of the artist and his seminal band The Smiths - with Latino youths in East Los Angeles.

For married and family audiences, Inside Out has a number of family-oriented features and programs, including free all-ages screenings at the NFB Cinema that play from 1 p.m. all day on Saturday, May 20th. As well, on Monday May 22, there's a special free 1 p.m. screening of Charlotte's Web, the 1973 animated adaptation of the E.B. White classic children's novel, followed by Transparent, an engaging documentary about female-to male transsexuals who've given birth and must reconcile their motherhood with their masculine identity.

There's also Beaver Valley, curated by CBC host Jane Farrow, the lesbian shorts program that riffs on Brokeback Mountain themes, from tearful to screamingly funny. The program features eight films from Canada, Germany, Hungary, and USA.

Back for its eighth year at the festival, the annual Queer Youth Digital Video Project has been a popular initiative of Inside Out. A mentorship program, it features seven first-time videomakers, between the ages of 17 and 24, who learn all facets of video production within a series of workshops. They will all have their debut at a special Festival screening.

Finally, what would a 16-year-old diva be without a gala or four? Inside Out's traditional program of three gala features has grown by one, to include an event called "Another Gay Gala." AGG will showcase the comedy feature Another Gay Film, which is described as "American Pie crossed with Porky's for the queer set."

Festival screenings will take place at two venues, Isabel Bader Theatre and the Royal Ontario Museum.

The opening night gala is the world premiere of SHAMELESS: The ART of Disability, the return to filmmaking for Canada's legendary Bonnie Sherr Klein. The award-winning director is returning to filmmaking after a catastrophic stroke changed her life in 1987. From this unique perspective, she brings the audience into her new world of disability culture. Art, activism and disability are the starting point in what unfolds as a funny and intimate portrait of five surprising individuals, including Klein herself.

Remember...1st Rule of Film Club: Tell Everyone About Film Club!

Forty years and still going strong, THIS Magazine is one of Canada's longest-publishing alternative journals. Founded by a gang of school activists in 1966, and originally called This Magazine Is About Schools, the modern-day THIS focuses on Canadian politics, literature and culture but, in keeping with its radical roots, never pulls punches. Subversive, edgy and smart, THIS is the real alternative to that. Visit THIS Magazine's new-and-improved website http://www.thismagazine.ca!
